A Final Homecoming

I received word from a fellow military spouse about Air Force Captain Reid Nishizuka who, along with three others, was killed in a plane crash in Afghanistan. Nishizuka was a local boy from Kailua and would be coming back to the island to be laid to rest at Punchbowl.

My friend and I took our kids and lined up along with hundreds of others to welcome him home and to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice.

Pottery Painting {Spring Break Day 4}

Today we combined our regular fun spring break activities with an FRG event. I invited the FRG to come join us for a pottery painting day at Hickam. I was VERY upset to learn that budget cuts may soon be affecting our favorite cheap place to paint! The kids had fun painting and hanging out with friends. We had a pretty good turnout of FRG ladies which was great, and I painted a replacement mug for my last one that has developed a hairline crack! pottery painting

After expressing ourselves artistically some of us headed over to Wright Bros. for a delicious lunch by the water… Grilled veggie panini for me, yum! The fish were out and about and we saw DOZENS of yellow tangs. Why have we never seen these fish snorkeling???

Cutie kids and cutie moms… Seriously, I have met some really great ladies this deployment!cuteAnd Mckenna is ready for a baby sister… Sorry to disappoint! Not happening!

Breakfast with a view…

Omar had soccer pictures on Saturday morning over on Hickam, when he was done we had some time to kill before his game so we popped over to Wright Brothers for some breakfast. I LOVE eating here, it is priced really well ($3.25 for a kids plate and that includes a drink) the food is good and it comes out quick. Also the view is pretty great, right across the entrance to Pearl harbor. The outdoor seating is really beautiful although hard to come by, I was stalking tables waiting for someone to leave!
breakfast

It’s a great spot to take pictures (which is why soccer pictures are done here I assume!) Lots of pretty trees and a lovely backdrop. I’ll have to bring them back in something other than soccer uniforms!pose

There is also a seawall right by the restaurant that allows some great fish watching, lots of FAT fish from all of the bread people feed them. I even saw some yellow tangs which is crazy because we haven’t seen them ONCE while snorkeling.fish

Anyways, get over to Wright Brothers, have some breakfast or lunch and enjoy the view and breeze!

Pro Bowl Practice

One of the cool things about living in Hawaii is the fact that we get to host the Pro Bowl. While we weren’t planning on going to the Pro Bowl itself, we did go to the practice that took place on Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam. We braved the rain and mud and left with NO Redskins signatures! We had a good time anyways!

redskinsWe had FOUR Redskins players to be chosen for the Pro Bowl (curse you RGIII for getting hurt!) London Fletcher was the big draw for us but we just could not get close enough for an autograph (planning on stalking him until he leaves the island though!)

playersIt was pretty cool to watch them practice although it looked pretty half-hearted. I mean I think they practice for real at one of the local high schools, this was more a publicity we heart our military thing. The kids did get up close and personal with a bunch of players but didn’t get any signatures because they were waiting for the Redskins players to come their way.

I will say I was not prepared for the crowds that turned out! I got there about an hour and a half before the start time and it was already packed. Also everyone came ready with chair, coolers and duffel bags FULL of stuff to get signed! So next year I’ve already decided I’ll be getting there at the crack of dawn to stake out a spot at the fence on the 50 yard line.

And there goes my week…

The kids have both started soccer. And it is going to be just as bad as I imagined it would be.  We’ve never had both of them in a sport at the same time. I was hoping and wishing that their schedules would work out because I don’t have a back up in case I need to be in two places at the same time.

As of right now we are good but our entire week is taken up by practice, me on Mon, Mckenna Tue and Thur and Omar Wed. I actually have Tues/Thurs as well but I don’t think I’ll be making it for awhile…

Of course I couldn’t have a nice easy practice week could I?

Mckenna’s coach had left directions to the field on our group page, I’m thinking, I know where that is, through that gate, yeah there is a field over there… Well silly ol’ me decided to be fun mom and go to a movie after school on Tuesday (whoo-hoo $6 tickets on Tuesdays!) because of this we got home with enough time to get to practice on time, not early but on time. Well to the location where I thought it was. Coach’s directions say MAKALAPA gate, so guess which gate I go through? The Makalapa gate… Well from there on the directions DO NOT make sense. I am stressing, it’s getting later and later, Mckenna is CRYING, I am SWEATING! I finally look at the direction and see she wrote a street by the gate but that is not the street the gate is on, ugh. So I drive over to that street and whaddayah know, I was supposed to go in a totally freaking different gate on the total opposite side of the street. I could have cried.

So we follow the (now perfectly sensible) directions and get there a mere 20 minutes late for her FIRST practice. Parenting FAIL. She runs out onto the field while I walk over to this cabana thing to see if there are any social parents there. (At this point I am just hoping you can’t see sweat stains through my shirt) I do mention offhand that we got totally lost with the directions, so everyone doesn’t think we are just late people (no that realization will come later in the season!) But no one is chatty. One couple in their own little world, one dad doing homework with his son and then one table of moms who already know each other and just talk away. So whatever, I do what any other semi-socially awkward person would do, hop on my cell phone and call my sistah to tell her my ridiculous tale.

Then. THEN! After practice the coach is giving her little talk to the parents about the upcoming season and she mentions that all the girls need to make sure they are wearing shin-guards even to practice and I swear I got a pointed look. Damn it! Okay listen, we have sports equipment coming out our ears over here! I could NOT find Mckenna’s other stupid shinguard! I know it is somewhere in the house, we’ve seen it floating around but aren’t exactly sure of it’s exact location.

So off to the exchange, new shin-guards and even a new ball because we had no size 5 and Mckenna would look insane out there with a size 3 of Omar’s!

(AND after all that mess of getting there Mckenna is upset that all the girls already go to school together and are friends. Oy. PLEASE let these girls be nice girls!!!)

Oh can I offer up this comparison of our cleats?

photo (9)Omar’s, Mckenna’s, mine. I can fit her cleats! And yes we do like flashy cleats!

Omar had his first practice today after an afternoon phone call from the coach saying he sent me an email Monday. Uh, no you didn’t! All the way across town in rush hour traffic, kill me. And everyone lives on the same street in this housing area except for us. Weird. I don’t know why they put us on this team. Coach seems nice, only one other mom was there and she was chatty! Like REALLY chatty! It was fine, better than being ignored. (Just because I can’t help myself… I am the only person who thinks it’s weird to wear nylons with a sundress on an 80 degree day in Hawaii? No I’m not the only one? Good, cause that was… odd.) She invited us to a party at Chuck E. Cheese so Omar will like that, get to know his team a little better. Thankfully the ride home is opposite traffic and is very fast!

Fingers crossed that they both have an awesome season, go Lava Warriors and Sharks!

(And may my little odd kids out make some good friends!)

Weekend recap

We actually had a busy weekend. Shocker. Normally we have zero plans but this weekend we were running around a bit.

Saturday started WAY too early, Omar had soccer pictures at 8:15. That is just wrong. So we had to get up really early to get over to the spot they were taking photos.

This is me taking a photo in blatent disregard of the no camera signs. But it’s not like I was trying to take any posed pictures, I just wanted to show the BEAUTIFUL location right on the water. Damn I love living here!

After pictures we had some time to kill before his game so we ran over to the exchange and I grabbed a coffee and some supplies for a deployment craft. (will post as soon as it’s done)

The hulks had another awesome game and won again! (Doesn’t it totally look like Omar is about to do a header? That would have been cool!)

After his game, we ran home and showered him so we could meet up with some of the spouses from our ship. It was very different from what I was expecting since my last experience was with an aircraft carrier with thousands of sailors and now it is a destroyer with a couple hundred. On the carrier the officer’s and enlisted spouses didn’t even meet together which I thought was so weird. Whatever. Anyways, so I guess I thought this was a big spouse meet and greet. Nope. It was our two ombudsman and  6 wives. As of right now we don’t have a Family Readiness Group or FRG but we are trying to get one started. So we are the ‘get it started’ group. Not that I mind, I do love to volunteer and everyone was really nice and enthusiastic.

Our ‘spouse support’ group. We did have a nice lunch. (And I recommend the Italian Chicken Panini at Wright Brothers Cafe!)

Mckenna holding one of my neighbor’s twins at our meeting. Seriously folks. This is where I live.

After lunch we ran to a friends house for a bbq. We are on the football team together and I was feeling really bad because we were running about an hour late because my other meeting ran long. Wouldn’t you know it? We were the first people there? Rude! I can’t stand people who don’t show up for parties! And no one else showed up for almost another hour! I felt terrible for her! Eventually everyone showed up and the kids had fun playing. She has a son Omar’s age and Mckenna got to play with ANOTHER set of twin boys!

I swear I feed this boy!

Look at these gorgeous ladies! What good looking football players! We ended up having a good time, I met another wife from the ship, the kids had fun running around and I didn’t have to make dinner. Win-win!

Sunday we ended up having a lazy morning. Mckenna was driving me nuts so I called another football friend and asked if her daughter could come play. Thankfully they live really close so it worked out perfect! The girls had a great time playing with American Girl dolls.

They wanted me to take this picture to submit to American Girl magazine. They are so cute!

Finally it was time to get ready for my football game. I was kind of dreading it because we had lost the last two and I was kind of demoralized. I play center so I am the one who snaps the ball. If I have a bad snap it’s a dead ball and we lose yards. Its VERY stressful! Anyways, we ended up playing Army and we won! It was SUCH a fun game. We were laughing and having fun and kicking the crap outta them. I did end up getting hit pretty hard, I was chasing after the running back and some broad came outta nowhere and plowed into me. I was SO pissed, I came up swearing. Its FLAG football, not tackle! My team had to rein me in a bit so I didn’t get into trouble and the other team ended up getting a personal foul and losing 15 yards. Meanwhile I have a lovely scraped upper thigh as a trophy.

We also had team pictures taken. I am happy we were all wearing our pretty new jerseys on Sunday!

So that was our weekend. We succeeded in keeping busy, the less time we are home the less time we are moping about daddy being gone! Can’t wait to talk to him on the phone again! Emails and chat just don’t cut it! (Such a spoiled 21st century Navy wife!)
