Snapped a few shots of Air Force One while the President was enjoying his holiday in Hawaii! I wish we could have seen the First Family but we never got the chance. Maybe next year!

Military Offer From Costco!

I just had to share this!

I was looking around online for a military discount for Costco because I want some other options to but meat and produce.  I stumbled upon this great deal that Costco is offering military-affiliated new members.

You do need to verify your military affiliation which I did using my Tricare Prime card (one of the options) because it has the least amount of personal information on it, just my name.

The offer gives you $50+ in freebies when you sign up for a new membership. My offer says it includes a free rotisserie chicken, a free pack of bottled water, and a free 48 pack of AA batteries, plus more. You pretty much get the cost of membership reimbursed in goodies!

This offer says it is good until March 31, 2013. If you are already planning on getting a membership you can’t beat this deal!

Costco Military Membership Offer

Jinxing myself

So yesterday morning we had the ideal get ready for school morning. I mean perfect. The best one since school started. I don’t know how it happened or if we will every be able to repeat the performance!

I was actually pretty worried because our ‘schedule’ over the past two weeks has been laughable. It’s pretty much stay up as late as you want, sleep in as late as you want. We were a mess. I tried getting the kids to go to sleep earlyish on Tuesday but didn’t really have any luck. So last night I put Omar to bed a little early because I figured he would have trouble going to sleep, nope. Right to sleep by 8:30. Mckenna on the other hand could not fall asleep! I don’t know if it was a combination of excitement and lack of a set bedtime lately but she was awake until about 10. So I was extra worried. I did have them pick out clothes before going to bed because that is always a crazy last minute “I don’t have matching socks, where is my other croc?” disaster in the morning.

So I’m getting some internet time in after the kids go to bed and see this crockpot oatmeal recipe on pinterest. I love love love my crockpot but I have always been a little nervous about cooking overnight with it. I know they are safe but I just always feel like I am going to burn my house down while I am sleeping. But apple cinnamon oatmeal ready and waiting in the morning just was too tempting to resist and I had all the ingredients on hand! Amazing!

So around 11 I am making oatmeal crossing my fingers that it is going to turn out okay and I hear the pitter pat of little feet on the stairs. Now Omar is up. Seriously? So I tell him to go back to bed I am going to bed myself in a minute. Well I go upstairs and the little bugger is in my bed. At this point I don’t care, just want to try and get some sleep myself before the alarm goes off (I had drugged myself with NyQuil and was just waiting for it to kick in. What? I needed to sleep!)

Come 3 or 4 in the morning little miss Mckenna feels the need to wake me up to tell me she can’t get back to sleep. Really? Pretty sure I mumble-yelled for her to go back to bed. These kids are killing me!

Then at 6:18 she is back in my room exclaiming that she just got ready in 3 minutes, isn’t that great and now she is going downstairs for breakfast. I tell her there is oatmeal but then get up myself so I can go see how it turned out. Omar hears us but snuggles in for a few more minutes.

Mckenna tells me its good, then proceeds to tell me she didn’t really care for it. Why does she do this?! If you don’t like it, it’s fine! I liked it, I would just make it with less water next time so it is a little thicker. I like to add a lot of milk but this was already pretty soupy so too much mil would have been a disaster. I pop upstairs to tell Omar I have oatmeal ready and he is awake. And cheerful. That NEVER happens. This boy is my grumpy teenager in the morning who is the WORST to wake up. So he gets up and eats a bowl of oatmeal (and actually likes it) and brushes his teeth with no prompting.

At this point I am kind of feeling like I am in the Twilight Zone. But hey, I am going to go with it! Lunches are packed, hair is styled and we are out the door a few minutes early.

Then, I actually managed to leave the house in workout clothes so I go to my community gym and actually exercise! What in the world! Ran a mile straight plus warm up and cool down it was almost a mile and a half. I was super proud of myself and am going to stick with it. There is no reason I can’t go to the gym that is 1/4 mile from my house and run for 15 minutes 3-5 times a week.

So yeah. Best morning ever. I even am working on cleaning out my house. I didn’t just clean and stick stuff in closets. I cleaned SO much stuff out. My garbage can was full tonight when we took it out. Filed, sorted, and have a massive stash of stuff that needs to go to Goodwill.

Now let’s see how this morning goes, I have to say I am kinda digging a two day school week!

Honolulu Zoo

DSC_0130aOne of our last ‘fill up two weeks off of school with fun’ fun days was to hit up the zoo. Of course when I suggested it you would have thought it was the meanest thing ever. They were turning into mole people in the days after Christmas, blinds closed, eyes glued to tv and video games. I finally dragged them out of the house and made it to the zoo all on my own, no gps needed. What a great feeling that is! Also bonus #2, I found a parking spot in the lot right next to the zoo. $1/hour parking, heck yes!

Let me go ahead and get my flower photos out of the way here. Can I just say that I love how well landscaped this zoo is? It is so beautiful and lush.

First up, the Keiki Zoo, or petting zoo (keiki means kids/children in Hawaiian). One of my favorite parts is the koi tank that the kids can crawl through. The koi are huge and beautiful. The first time we came here Omar refused to go in so I am happy he actually decided to do it this time. Don’t my kids look like they like each other in that picture? False!

It wasn’t too crowded which was great, we took our time and walked and walked and walked. One thing that drove us crazy was the lions! You could hear them calling from all over the park but we could never catch a glimpse. I know some new cubs were just born so maybe they were still inside but I wanted to get some pictures of mom or dad making all that noise!

We saw pretty much everyone else though. Thanks for cooperating zoo animals!

The meerkats were cracking me up, they looked like three little old men on a park bench. And the baboon was mid-yawn, he just looks menacing but was in fact being very sweet, although look at those canines! Yikes! The lemurs and turtle were having a standoff which was quite amusing, they couldn’t get to their island and he was very contentedly sunbathing. And Ms. Rhino, well she was posing pretty!

And of course the awesome trees that are all over make for a perfect backdrop, I love the banyan trees!

If you live here make sure you take a trip out to the zoo, they have military and kama’aina discounts! We paid $8/adult $4/kid. Not bad! Also you are allowed to bring in your own food and drinks so pack a picnic lunch and a blanket!

NYE with no plans

So we had no plans this New Year’s Eve. We just wanted to hang out at home, no parties, no big deal.

It was actually not too bad. I made bbq pork sandwiches, corn on the cob and we had pecan pie for dessert. Quite the southern meal for a New Year’s in Hawaii!

At around 11pm Mckenna reminded me to do our yearly interview. I’ve done this for the past few years, asked the kids some questions about the past year, about themselves and what they would like to happen in the new year. Its a cute way to document the new year with the kids.

Finally at 11:30 I said you know what? Let’s drive up to Camp Smith and watch the fireworks from there. There had been fireworks going off for the past SIX hours, it was very exciting. Hawaiians love them some fireworks! We aren’t allowed to set them off in Navy housing, not that that was stopping people but I wasn’t trying to get into trouble!

So we grab some blankets, the dog and hop into the car.

Camp Smith is a small Marine base up on top of a hill with an absolutely stunning panorama from Waikiki to Ewa Beach. You can see the entire southern half of the island. I’ve played football up there and we always get a beautiful sunset to watch during practice. We got really lucky because we got to watch about 6 sets of fireworks going off at the same time. I don’t even know where they were all coming from, Waikiki, Ala Moana, Ewa, Pearl Harbor, I really am not sure. But it made for a great show.

DSC_0006Watching the show…

We also had the added bonus of all of the neighborhoods around the base and the base itself setting off fireworks. It was awesome. Especially since there is a pretty steep hill right in front of the kids with houses down there, and they were sending up fireworks that would go off right at our eye level.

DSC_0011I am pretty mad that I forgot to take my camera’s tripod so I couldn’t get any good flash off/long exposure fireworks pictures. Guess I’ll have to try it around the corner in July!

…And in with the New.

So it’s that time, New Year’s Resolution time. I haven’t actually made any for a few years now because I never succeed and then get depressed. But these are just some things I would like to work toward this year and even if I improve just a little bit, that is better than none!

So here is my 13 for ’13…

    1. Eating. I really want to continue to improve what I eat. This deployment and the holidays sent me totally off track, and I would like to get back to eating Paleo or clean or whatever you want to call it. Eating real food, no diet, no restrictions, just real food. As someone said, if your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize it, you shouldn’t be eating it. Although for me I would also like to eliminate most if not all of the sugar and dairy.
    2. Exercise. I am not committing to anything crazy but I would love to get back into running. I don’t know if I need to do C25K again or just get my butt on the treadmill. Football is great but I want to be doing something else as well.
    3. Organization. My mom got me the fabulous organizer I wanted for Christmas (Erin Condren life planner!) and I would really like to be less scatterbrained. It’s very frustrating to me that my memory isn’t what it used to be and I’m juggling a lot of commitments right now. I want to be on top of things instead of a step behind!
    4. The house. Making it a home. That means getting the rest of the boxes unpacked and getting rid of the excess clutter. I want my husband to come home and be comfortable and be able to find what he needs! Watching hoarders is a great motivator and I heard something on there that resonated with me: You aren’t honoring your belongings if they are just shoved unused somewhere. If I am not using it, I don’t need it.
    5. Job. I want a job. I really miss working and have been trying to find something that will work for me as well as something I would really love to do. Trying to work around the kids schedules is a challenge as well!
    6. Internet. I would like to cut down the time I am online. I spend more time than necessary because I am bored/lonely/addicted.
    7. Blogging. While this goes hand in hand with #6 I would like to keep up to 3-4 times a week. When I did my 2012 recap post I had such a great time looking over the past year and I am so glad that I started blogging as a way to journal that.
    8. Kiddos. Without a doubt I can improve my parenting. I have been frustrated and impatient and taken it out on them. So more patience, less yelling. That is my goal here!
    9. Cooking. More new recipes! I am actually pretty good about this, I’ve been trying to cook some of the many, many things I’ve pinned on Pinterest. I would like some new items to add to my staple recipes as well as try to make more of the snacks my kids eat from scratch. (Love this book:The Homemade Pantry: 101 Foods You Can Stop Buying and Start Making)
    10. Keeping in Touch. I am terrible with this and am the worst when it comes to really staying in contact with my friends from the past and present, and family! I am really going to try to reach out more and keep those relationships up because I really do have some awesome friends.
    11. Photography. More pictures! Every day use my camera if possible. I don’t think I will ever regret the pictures I do take, only the pictures I don’t. Also improve in my photography, take a class if I can and get better when it comes to editing.
    12. My husband. I want to keep supporting him as he carries out his mission. I want him to always feel like he has a supporter in his corner and a family and wife who are always thinking about him. So this means keep the emails, facebook messages, cards and packages going… I want to overwhelm him with love!
    13. Me. Specifically my attitude. I have a tendency to be a little bit distant and sarcastic but that is pretty much because I am a giant ball of insecurity! I want to open up more and be me, but better.

So come on 2013
